Outside the Box Recruiting Ideas

Outside the Box Recruiting Ideas

Just because you have a position open at your Medical Practice doesn’t mean your inbox will instantly be flooded with resumes – at least not with resumes of qualified and top candidates.  So what can you do to get the word out about your new positions and recruit top employees? Post Your Career Opportunities On-Line The first place to start is by posting your job on-line.  Every job posting should go on as many free places as possible. Your website, Craigslist, Facebook, LinkedIn are great starting points.  Having an on-line job application is also a great way to increase the number of qualified applicants you get.  We recently switched to using ApplicantStack to post our jobs. The feature we like the most is the screen questionnaire on the application.  The computer now weeds out candidates who don’t meet our minimum qualifications. This has saved us a great deal of time. Search Resumes On-Line There are several sites where you can search resumes for free and reach out to candidates you think may be qualified for your job.  Be cautious of hidden fees.  Most of the time it is free to search the resumes on these sites, but it costs you to correspond.  Still, we’ve found the amount of money spent reaching out to candidates this way is still much less than what we spend on a classified job posting in the local newspaper. Two great places to start are Indeed.com and ResumeBucket.com. Network on LinkedIn I recently received an e-mail from a friend of mine in town who is trying to fill two account executive sales spots at his radio station.  It read, “I noticed you are friends with X, Y, & Z, and I’m interested in speaking to them about the positions I have open.  Would you mind sharing their contact information with me, or contacting them directly for me and letting them know about the opportunity.”  What a fantastic way to use your LinkedIn Network to help you fill positions. Constant Recruiting Just because you don’t have a position currently open doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be recruiting.  Even when all of our positions are full, we still have “open” positions posted on our website.  This keeps us from being in a bind should something happen unexpectedly to one of our current employees. Outside the Box Recruiting Finally, there are several outside the box ideas you can utilize to market your open positions to the community.  Some of my favorites are:

  • Leave a business card with a friendly server or cashier, and write on the back “Call me to discuss possible job opportunities – we could use talent like you.”
  • Advertise in church bulletins, apartment mailbox areas, salons, and at sporting events.
  • Hold your own job fair.
  • Place fliers on the windshields of parked cars.
  • Ask the local pizza places if you can place a job advertisement/flyer on their boxes.
  • Contact the career services department at your local colleges/universities.
  • Host a “Bring a Friend” lunch for current employees and ask them to bring a friend who needs a job.
  • Make “tear-off” flyers and put them up at your local universities.
  • Offer a finders fee to currently employees who help you bring on top talent.
